Common Questions

With so many service providers, how do I choose the right one for me?

I recommend that you assess providers' professional backgrounds (i.e., their education [generally, the Ph.D. is considered the most advanced non-medical degree in the mental-health field] and licensure status [fully licensed providers hold designations like "Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist" and "Licensed Professional Counselor"]), accessibility (i.e., Does this provider respond in a timely fashion to me?), care/warmth, and, most importantly, your connection with and like of the provider. Additionally, I encourage you to interview as many providers as you need to in order to feel secure with your decision.

If I hire you as a Counselor or Coach, how many appointments will we have?

The average psychotherapy client attends between eight and 12 sessions, generally on a weekly basis. However, some clients meet their needs after one session, and other clients require months or even years to achieve their goals. I am in contact with my average coachee for about three months, with weekly sessions, consisting of 15 minute intervals up to her/his desired time for each appointment. Upon availability, I do provide retainer coaching on six- or 12-month contracts.

What are your scheduling/payment policies?

I require 24-hours notice to cancel or reschedule a session. If the client does not do this, I will charge her/him in full for the missed session. If the client arrives late to a session, s/he will be given whatever time remains of her/his appointment time. Payment in full is required at the appointment time. I accept cash, check, and credit cards.

How do you protect your clients’ privacy?

I will make every possible effort to keep your contact with me private. Sometimes, those with whom I work request home visits. Other clients make contact via e-mail exchanges; however, I cannot guarantee privacy within such exchanges. Feel free to inform me of your specific wants.

How many years have you worked as a Counselor?

Over 20 years.

How many years have you worked as a Coach?

Over 10 years. After 10 years in the field of counseling, I recognized that some clients prefer different approaches to helping them create change in their lives. As examples, some couples want pre/post-union consulting about what they can do in order to prepare for a long life together; some families request direction about parenting, failure to launch, financial, and other concerns as they relate to overall family well-being; and some professionals and organizations want to increase their productivity, efficiency, and overall profits with methods from executive coaching.

How many years have you worked as a Speaker?

I have spoken in local, state, and national conferences/forums for over 12 years. I am very comfortable entertaining small and large groups of people, as well as learning a lot about your specific needs so that I can give you the information for which you have been yearning.

What therapy models do you use?

All of my therapeutic models find basis in the assumption that relationships act as the primary influence in peoples’ life experiences. Mindfulness permeates my work with others; more specifically, post-modern models (e.g., Narrative and Social-Constructionist) inform most of my practice. Additionally, Emotionally-Focused Couples Therapy (arguably, the couples model with the most research support) influences much of my couples therapy.
